Unexpected Items to Pack for Your Next Camping Trip

Hundreds of checklists exist for anyone heading out to the campgrounds. Heck, we have one on our own site! But here are a few things you may not regularly find on those checklists.

Cardboard

Why would cardboard be on your camping checklist? Here’s why: Every camping trip seems to start the same way—we have firewood and fire starters, but nothing to bridge the gap between the two.

Cardboard makes excellent kindling and is a great way to repurpose those extra boxes that don’t fit in your recycling bin. Toss a few pieces into your car before heading out—you’ll be glad you did when your fire is roaring!

Blow dryer

No, this isn’t about styling your hair! A blow dryer can be a lifesaver on a camping trip. One summer, while living in a camper, I ran out of propane in the middle of the night. My hair dryer saved the day—or night—by heating up my sleeping bag for an hour or so.

It can also come in handy for quick fixes like drying out socks or other essentials if the weather turns wet. While it won’t dry larger items like blankets, it’s a small yet versatile tool to have when laundry facilities are busy or unavailable.

Large clear garbage bags

Garbage bags are surprisingly versatile on a camping trip, but clear ones are especially useful. They can protect your golf cart seat from rain, serve as an emergency poncho, or even act as a laundry bag.

Why clear bags? They help avoid confusion. Whether for trash, dirty laundry, or storing a charcoal grill, clear bags make it easy to see what’s inside. This simple tip can prevent mix-ups and potential arguments—like accidentally throwing away your husband’s clothes!

Humility — For real

Campers are some of the most friendly and relational people you’ll ever meet. Whether it’s helping a neighbor back up their camper, lending a multi-tool, or asking to borrow a lighter because you forgot yours, every camping trip is a series of unexpected friendships waiting to happen.

If you forget something, don’t hesitate to ask a friendly face—they’ll likely be happy to help! And of course, with a thoughtful camping checklist, you’ll be more than equipped to lend a hand to others, too!
